Diversity in Character Industries

This panel will discuss how the industries dealing with character creation, especially in animation and illustration, are changing in terms of being more diverse and inclusive. We want to reflect on what has been achieved and point out what still lies ahead of us. The panel features Alison Mann, Talent Manager and Co-President of Fourth Wall Animation and co-founder of the BRIC foundation; Bee Grandinett, animation director, designer and co-founder of Panimation; Kristina Snyder, CEO and founder of Snyder New York, a women-owned agency; and Afro-Belgian 3D illustrator and animator Loulou João, whose work shines a unique light on the representation of Black women. The panel will be moderated by It’s Nice That’s associate editor Jyni Ong.

Loulou João is an Afro-Belgian 3D illustrator and animator whose mixed roots inform her investigations into how white supremacy is upheld and how it affects her identity. She uses 3D software (Blender) to visualize a digital world that consists of candy-coated squishy plastic objects. Here she can focus on the expression of her true self beyond society’s constructs; a safe space that allows her to reflect on the struggles she faces in the physical world. Viewing Blackness as a technology that is constantly evolving to survive objectification and oppression, Loulou shines a unique light on the representation of Black women; an approach that has attracted clients such as Adult Swim, Spotify, Adobe, The New Yorker, The New York Times, Burning Man and MTV.louloujoao.com
